Clinton, MA renovation contractor for older mill-town homes

Clinton packs a lot of house onto not much land, and older homes in a mill town call for careful work. Chris Gamache runs the crews himself, and every job starts with a written estimate.

How Clinton’s mill-town past shapes a remodel

Clinton grew as a mill town, and that history is still in its houses and streets. The land was settled in 1654 as part of Lancaster, and Clinton became its own town in 1850, founded by the Bigelow brothers, whose mills used the Nashua River for power. By 1890 the town was known for making carpets and woven wire. (Source: Wikipedia.)

A compact town

About 15,400 people live on 5.7 square miles of land in Clinton, a tight footprint for a town its size. Lots near the center are small, so the practical options for an addition are going up or out the back.

Older houses, older surprises

Homes from a town’s industrial years can hide old wiring, framing that was changed by past owners, or plumbing that has been patched more than once. The estimate covers what we can see, and added work found behind the walls is handled as a written change order.

The reservoir and the dam

The Wachusett Dam, built in Clinton between 1897 and 1905, holds back the Wachusett Reservoir south of the town center, and its construction flooded part of the town. Work close to the river or the reservoir can bring in the Conservation Commission.

Permits

Building permits come from the town’s Building Department; Town Hall is at 242 Church Street. We file the permits and handle the inspections.

Clinton FAQs

What Clinton homeowners ask us

Other questions are covered on the FAQ page.

Can you add space to a house on a small Clinton lot?

Usually by building up. A second-story addition keeps the yard, and zoning setbacks and height limits decide what fits, so we check those before any design work.

Who issues building permits in Clinton?

The town’s Building Department. We file the permits for our work and meet the inspectors at each stage.

Is financing available for a Clinton remodel?

Yes, for larger projects. The financing page explains how to apply.

Do you repair or rebuild porches?

Yes. We have rebuilt front porches, and porch work falls under our specialty construction services.

Can you handle a roof at the same time as a remodel?

Yes, through Roofing by Gamache, our roofing division.
