Sterling, MA contractor for additions, kitchens and baths
Sterling has kept a lot of open land, and homeowners here often want more room without giving up the land around them. Every house in town runs on its own septic system, so a good plan for an addition starts there. We start with a visit and a written estimate, and Chris Gamache’s crews do the building.

Gamache Construction for Sterling homeowners
Gamache Construction, a family-owned contractor based in Northborough, Massachusetts, serves Sterling as part of its Worcester County service area. Since 2006 the company has built home additions and remodeled kitchens, bathrooms and basements, along with garages and interior painting. Owner Chris Gamache runs three construction crews and brings in plumbing, electrical and tile trades as each job needs them. The company is licensed in Massachusetts and insured, handles permits and inspections, gives a detailed written estimate before scheduling, and backs its labor with a warranty.
Why septic comes first on a Sterling addition
Sterling has no town sewer, so every house has a private septic system. Under the state’s Title 5 rules a septic system is sized by bedroom count, which means an addition with a new bedroom, an in-law suite or a converted office needs the Board of Health to confirm the system can carry it before a building permit is issued. - Water. Town water, drawn from six groundwater wells, reaches many homes; the more rural parts of town are on private wells.
- Electric. Sterling is one of 41 Massachusetts communities with its own municipal light department, so service upgrades are coordinated with the town utility.
- Size and access. The town covers about 30.6 square miles of land, and Interstate 190 cuts it in half, with Routes 12, 62, 110 and 140 crossing it too. Lots range from village streets to open rural land.
- History. Sterling was the Second Parish of Lancaster, called Chocksett, until it became its own town in 1781. The Sterling Center Historic District surrounds the town common.

Will my septic system limit an addition in Sterling?
It can if the addition adds a bedroom. The Board of Health checks the system’s design against the new bedroom count under Title 5, and an upgrade may be needed. A family room or a bigger kitchen with no new bedroom is a different case.
Who handles the building permit in Sterling?
We do. We prepare the application, file it with the town, whose offices are at One Park Street, and are on site for the inspections.
I am on a private well. Does that change a kitchen or bath remodel?
Not much for the remodel itself. We work with the existing supply, and if new fixtures or a second bathroom are planned, the plumber on the job looks at the system as part of the scope.
Do you build garages in Sterling?
Yes. We build detached and attached garages, sized and finished to match the house.
What does an addition in Sterling cost?
The written estimate after the first visit sets it. Size, foundation, how it ties into the house and any septic work move the price most.
