Local conditions

Marlborough is a city, and that shapes the paperwork

Marlborough became a city in 1890, when it moved from town meeting to a mayor and city council. It sits in Middlesex County, while most of our service area is in Worcester County.

A shoe-making city with a long Main Street

Main Street follows the old Boston Post Road, and the Marlborough Center Historic District covers the heart of downtown. By 1890 Marlborough was a major shoe manufacturing center, and its growth brought skilled workers from Quebec, Ireland, Italy and Greece. Later, Interstate 495, Interstate 290 and the Massachusetts Turnpike brought high-tech employers and a new wave of building.

For a remodel, that history means two kinds of houses. Older homes near the center can carry original trim, plaster and framing that new work has to tie into. Newer neighborhoods tend to need kitchens, baths and basements brought up to how families live now. We plan for whichever one you have.

Lots near the lakes or the Assabet River can bring the city’s Conservation Commission into an addition or deck project under state wetlands rules, so we look at that before design.
