Remodeling in Northbridge and Whitinsville, MA
Northbridge is a town of mill villages, and many of its houses were built in the 1800s for the families who worked the mills. Making one of them comfortable for today, with a kitchen that fits, a bathroom that works and maybe more room, takes a contractor who respects the old house and explains the cost before starting.

A mill town’s houses, and what they need
Northbridge was settled in 1704 and incorporated in 1772. Its character comes from the Blackstone and Mumford Rivers and the mills built along them.
- Whitinsville and the Whitin Machine Works. From 1831 to 1964 the Whitin shop in Whitinsville was at its peak the largest maker of textile machinery in the world, and the village grew up around it.
- Nineteenth-century houses. Most of the town’s 19th-century architecture has been preserved, and many old mill buildings have been converted to housing. Older houses here call for careful work on framing, plaster and trim when rooms are opened up.
- Several villages. Northbridge includes Whitinsville, Linwood, Rockdale, Riverdale and Northbridge Center, plus smaller areas such as Plummer’s Corner and the Quaker District, with horse farms on the outskirts.
- Heritage corridor. The town is part of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, the first industrialized region in the United States.
- Permits. The Building Department is at Town Hall, 7 Main Street, Whitinsville. We file there and handle the inspections.

Do you work in Whitinsville and the other Northbridge villages?
Yes. Whitinsville, Linwood, Rockdale, Riverdale and the rest of Northbridge are all in our service area, and permits for any of them go through the Building Department at 7 Main Street in Whitinsville.
Can you remodel a 19th-century house without losing its character?
Yes. We match trim, doors and finishes to what the house already has where possible, and design guidance is available when you are choosing between keeping an original feature and replacing it.
Do you paint the exterior of older Northbridge homes?
Exterior painting, including the prep that older wood siding and trim need, is handled by our roofing division, Roofing by Gamache. Interior painting stays with us.
Who pulls the permit, me or the contractor?
We do. Gamache Construction prepares the application, files it with the Northbridge Building Department and handles the inspections.
Can you build an addition on a small village lot?
Sometimes. Setbacks and lot coverage decide what fits, and on tight lots a second-story addition or a basement finish can add space without using more ground. We look at those options on the first visit.
Our Northborough team works across MetroWest and Worcester County. Towns shown on this site are examples, not a complete boundary for project inquiries. Share your location and the work you are considering so we can confirm coverage for your project.
Have an older Northbridge house that needs work?
We will walk it with you, look at what the project will touch, and send back a written estimate so you can weigh it before anything is scheduled.
