Home renovations and additions in Millbury, MA

Millbury’s houses run from Greek Revival homes near the center to the neighborhoods that filled in after World War II. If yours has rooms that feel dated or too small, you want them rebuilt properly by people who are easy to have in the house, with the scope and price agreed before work starts.

Millbury homes

A mill town on the Blackstone, and what it built

Millbury began as the North Parish of Sutton, was first settled in 1716 and became its own town in 1813, named for the mills along the Blackstone River. That history is still visible in the house you may be about to remodel.

Early 1800s houses near the center

Mill money paid for fine houses. Asa Waters began his mansion in 1826 to a design by Asher Benjamin, and Greek Revival homes like the Samuel D. Torrey House, built about 1835, still line the older streets. Work on houses this age is about matching original trim, windows and proportions.

Postwar growth

Millbury grew from about 8,300 people in 1950 to about 12,000 by 1970. Many houses from those decades now need new kitchens, baths and finished basements, and some benefit from an addition.

Still a working mill town

John Singletary’s mill, started around 1753, still operates as the S & D Spinning Mill, one of the oldest continuously operated mills in the country. The town was named a Preserve America community in 2004.

Permits on Elm Street

The Building Department is in the Municipal Office Building at 127 Elm Street, where the Sewer Commission also has its office. We file the building permit there and handle the inspections.

Millbury FAQs

Questions about remodeling in Millbury

Find more on the FAQ page.

Where is the Millbury Building Department?

In the Municipal Office Building at 127 Elm Street. Gamache Construction files the building permit there for your project and handles the inspections.

Can you renovate an older Greek Revival house?

Yes. We remodel older homes and keep new trim, doors and finishes in line with the original house, and design guidance is available when deciding what to keep and what to replace.

Is a finished basement a good fit for a 1950s or 1960s Millbury house?

Often, yes. Many houses from that era have a full basement that can become a family room, bar or kitchenette without adding to the footprint. We look at moisture, ceiling height and access at the first visit.

Do you repair garages and other structures?

Yes. Garage construction and repair are part of our specialty work, and we can help with the insurance side when a structural repair follows damage.

Is financing available for a Millbury renovation?

Yes. Financing is available for larger projects. See the financing page for how to apply.

“Very clear estimate provided”

Gamache Construction did a great job repairing my garage after a corner was hit by a car and needed structural repair. Very clear estimate provided and work was completed in a timely manner. They even painted the whole side of the garage to ensure continuity. Well done!

“We were very happy with that work”

A few years ago, Gamache also did a sunroom addition for us, as well as replacing all of our windows and replacing a bathtub with a walk in shower. We were very happy with that work, also!
