Local conditions

What shapes a remodel or addition in Northborough

Northborough split off from Westborough as its “north borough,” became a district in 1766 and a town in 1775. These are the local details that change how a project here gets planned.

Permits come from 63 Main Street

The Northborough Building Department at the Town Offices handles building, plumbing, gas, electrical and HVAC permits, and the town takes those applications online.

Historic districts have their own review

Northborough has a Historic District Commission that reviews exterior changes to houses inside the town’s historic districts. An addition, a new porch or an exterior trim change there goes to the commission first.

Sewer or septic decides what a bedroom takes

The town runs a sewer collection system that sends wastewater to the City of Marlborough’s Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant. Houses outside it rely on septic systems, which the town Health Department oversees under the state Title 5 code.

Route 9 and Route 20 run through town

Both highways run through Northborough, and the town borders Westborough, Shrewsbury, Marlborough, Southborough, Berlin and Boylston.

How it runs

How a Northborough project moves from first visit to final walkthrough

  1. Walk the house

We come to your house, look at the rooms and the lot, and talk through what is not working for you now.

  2. Written estimate

You get the scope, the options and the pricing in writing before anything goes on the calendar.

  3. Permits and trades

We file with the Building Department, line up plumbing, electrical and tile, and book each inspection.

  4. Build and close out

Chris runs the crew on site, and the job ends with a walkthrough of the finished work with you.

“Contractors who are easy to work with are hard to find”

Chris and his team helped refresh the interior of our 50 year old house. They were very professional and did fantastic work. Contractors who are easy to work with are hard to find, but Chris was just that. I highly recommended Gamache Construction.

“Very clear estimate provided”

Gamache Construction did a great job repairing my garage after a corner was hit by a car and needed structural repair. Very clear estimate provided and work was completed in a timely manner. They even painted the whole side of the garage to ensure continuity. Well done!

FAQs

Questions from Northborough homeowners

More on the full FAQ page.

Where is the Gamache Construction office?

Our office is at 160 Otis Street, Unit C1-5, in Northborough, and it is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Northborough?

Most kitchen remodels that move plumbing, add circuits or open a wall need permits from the Northborough Building Department. We file them online with the town and schedule the inspections as the work reaches each stage.

Can I add on to a house in one of Northborough’s historic districts?

Yes, once the Historic District Commission approves the exterior design. We match the addition to the existing house and build that review into the schedule.

We are on septic. Can we add a bedroom?

That depends on the septic system. Under Title 5, a new bedroom needs confirmation from the town Health Department that the system can handle it, and we look at this before the addition is designed.

Can we stay in the house while you work?

We plan for it. During the estimate visit we go through which parts of the house will be out of use and for which stage, so you know ahead of time.

Do you handle roofing in Northborough?

Roofing and siding are handled by our roofing division, Roofing by Gamache. Gamache Construction handles the remodeling and construction side, including decks, windows and doors.
